Commissioners approve small community donation, hear fairgrounds and veterans updates, and report energy and highway planning concerns

At its March 20 meeting the Cheyenne County Board of County Commissioners approved several routine items and received updates on local projects.

The board approved a $250 donation to the Cheyenne Wells Booster Club for an after-prom event after a motion from Commissioner RJ Jolly and a second from Commissioner Rick Pelton; the minutes record that the motion passed but do not include a vote tally. Commissioners discussed estimated costs for an electrical upgrade at the fairgrounds; staff or a commissioner said final numbers would be submitted on Monday.

Glen Marciniak of the Division of Veterans Affairs provided a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) update, reporting that the intergovernmental agreement (IGA) appears to be proceeding smoothly with Veteran Service Officer Joy Johnson and outlining outreach ideas to assist more local veterans. Marciniak said he would follow up with Johnson on outreach plans.

In meeting reports, Commissioner Jolly said he had met with Xcel Energy representatives and County Attorney Kelly Lowery; he said Xcel discussed a possible variance on road setbacks for a generation tie line and a request to vacate a right-of-way. Commissioner Rick Pelton told the board he attended a Colorado Department of Transportation Eastern Region planning meeting and urged planners to consider Highway 385 between Cheyenne Wells and Burlington, noting the route is not listed on a 10-year plan.

The board reviewed expense vouchers and signed warrants before adjourning at 10:29 a.m.
