School committee honors MCAS high performers, approves field trip and routine business

The school committee opened its Nov. 14 meeting by recognizing students who scored in the "meeting" or "exceeding" performance ranges on the MCAS assessments. Superintendent Jason DeFalco praised students, families and educators for the results and thanked staff for their work preparing students.
After the recognition, the committee moved through routine business. Members approved warrants and accepted the minutes of the Oct. 10 meeting. The committee voted to accept three donated Hoyer lifts to assist students who require movement and transfer support; the superintendent explained the lifts were donated and included photos in the meeting packet.
The committee voted to approve the 2024–25 student improvement plans and the superintendent and district goals after motions and seconds on the floor. The committee also approved an 8th-grade Washington, D.C., field trip scheduled for June; the trip will be a bus trip with an $800 per-student fee and families were encouraged to begin fundraising.
Other agenda items handled by voice vote included facilities-use requests and budget transfers presented by the business office. The committee set its next meeting for Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. and adjourned unanimously.
What the committee approved (high level): acceptance of donated mobility lifts, approval of student-improvement plans and district goals, and approval of a Washington, D.C., field trip for grade 8.
