School committee approves playground repairs, driveway and sidewalks and funds athletics equipment

The Blackstone‑Millville Regional School Committee approved several small capital projects and athletics purchases at its June 23 meeting, authorizing repairs and equipment intended to address safety and accessibility issues and to replace aging athletic gear.
Facilities staff outlined three playground projects: repairs at JFK, AFM and Millville Elementary (estimated total not to exceed $60,000) to remove hazardous concrete/p‑stone, add compliant surfacing and address equipment that is broken or not age‑appropriate. Committee members asked that contractors provide written confirmation that the proposed wood‑chip depth and any rubber matting meet ADA access requirements before work begins.
The committee also approved up to $100,000 from FY22 to repave the middle school driveway in sections, removing old pavement and replacing base and asphalt on the entrance loop and other heavily worn segments; members discussed scheduling to minimize conflict with summer programs.
In addition, the committee approved up to $13,000 to repair and add sidewalks at Millville Elementary, including a walkway from auditorium doors to improve emergency egress and accessibility.
On athletics, staff presented a list of needed track and field equipment (new hurdles, high‑jump kit, starting blocks, updated discus/javelin equipment, sand replacement for long/triple jump pits and additional storage units) and a proposal to replace the top infill in the softball infield. The committee approved a combined total of $52,150 for those track and softball improvements.
Committee members requested bids and ADA documentation, and voted to encumber the approved funds so projects can begin promptly. Facilities staff said construction and purchases would be scheduled to avoid significant disruption to summer activities where possible.
