Casey Barton Behravesh, CDC One Health Office director, told a March 4 ZOHU webinar that CDC is coordinating with USDA, Interior and partners on a New World screwworm outbreak affecting animals and people in Central America and Mexico and pointed attendees to CDC and partner resources and recent publications.
Casey Barton Behravesh, director of CDC’s One Health Office, opened the ZOHU call by flagging recent outbreak activity and resources. She said CDC is coordinating closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of the Interior and governmental and nongovernmental partners on an outbreak of New World screwworm affecting livestock, companion animals, wildlife and people in Central America and Mexico and directed listeners to USDA and CDC websites for updates (including screwworm.gov).
Behravesh highlighted items in the call newsletter: a study using routine surveillance to assess dengue virus transmission risk in travelers, a report of a fatal Ehrlichia muris‑like infection in a liver transplant recipient, and reports of tick‑borne Rickettsia infections. She also noted program resources available to the public‑health community, including a USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service regenerative pilot for farmers, the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program for workplace hazard investigations, CDC and FDA’s Antimicrobial Resistance Isolate Bank, and an Antimicrobial Resistance Investment Map showcasing CDC extramural investments.
Behravesh closed by encouraging attendees to submit presenter suggestions and news items for future ZOHU calls and to sign up for the ZOHU newsletter for recurring updates.
