Summary
UNC Greensboro and local partners announced that Norway's national team selected Greensboro and UNCG as its training base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with partners highlighting local facilities, volunteer capacity and tourism benefits.
University and tourism leaders and the Greensboro Sports Foundation used the council meeting to announce that Norway's national football team will use UNC Greensboro as its base camp ahead of World Cup 2026.
UNC Greensboro Chancellor Frank Gilliam welcomed the announcement and played a recorded message from Team Norway explaining their choice of Greensboro's facilities and hotel options. Richard Beard, president and CEO of the Greensboro Sports Foundation, and Anthony Cordo of Visit Greensboro described the selection as a significant opportunity for sports tourism and community exposure.
Officials said the decision reflects months of partnership among UNCG, the Greensboro Sports Foundation, the city and the Greensboro Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and could yield international media attention and economic activity for hotels, restaurants and volunteers.
"Hosting the team places an international spotlight on Greensboro," Richard Beard said. Visit Greensboro said it expects coverage across Nordic media and described the potential economic impact on hospitality and related industries.
Council members and university representatives said the choice also positions Greensboro as a prospective host for future large sporting events, and they thanked volunteers and local partners for the coordination.
