Greensboro City Council adopted several ceremonial resolutions at its April meeting recognizing child- and family-focused observances and highlighting local efforts to support working families.
The council unanimously approved a resolution designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and another recognizing April 2026 as the Month of the Young Child and April 11'17 as the Week of the Young Child. Heather Adams, executive director of the Guilford County Partnership for Children, told the council the partnership has invested more than $300 million in local early-childhood programs since 1996 and described childcare as "core infrastructure." She urged the council to treat affordability, availability and workforce stability as policy priorities.
Council members also proclaimed April as STEM Education Month and invited community representatives to accept the recognition. Tiffany Jacobs, representing the local STEM community, thanked the council for support of career-exploration and workforce pathways.
In related business, city staff and community partners briefed the council on the city's recertification as a FamilyForward NC certified employer. Nancy Galispi of the city's People and Culture Department described the recertification as recognition of research-backed family-friendly workplace practices, and staff announced a new partnership with Child Care Network. The partnership offers qualifying city employees a 20% tuition discount at participating childcare locations and up to four hours of complimentary childcare for candidates interviewing on-site.
Action Greensboro officials and Child Care Network representatives described FamilyForward NC certification as a tool for recruiting and retaining workers and said more than 81 local employers are certified, representing roughly 50,000 employees. "When childcare is stable, our economy is stable," Heather Adams said.
The council took the proclamations and recognitions as ceremonial business; no policy votes or funding commitments tied to the recertification were made during the presentation.
Council members said they appreciated community advocacy on early-childhood investments and noted they will hear detailed budget and program proposals in coming meetings.
