The Adelanto City Council voted on Feb. 26, 2025, to recess into closed session to discuss an existing lawsuit and negotiations over the sale of the city stadium.
Mayor Reyes moved to approve the meeting agenda and the council carried the motion by voice vote before recessing. The mayor then turned the floor to Todd, a city staff member, who read two closed-session items: the Newman v. Adelanto matter, identified as existing litigation under Government Code section 54956.9(d)(1) and described in the meeting as involving a traffic accident; and a conference with real property negotiators under Government Code section 54956.8 concerning the sale of the stadium. Todd said, "We have the Newman versus Adelanto matter, which is existing litigation, government code section 54956.9(d)(1). That was a traffic accident," and that the second item concerned negotiations about the stadium.
The council opened a public-comment period and asked whether anyone was online; the clerk reported there were no online participants and public comment was closed. The council then voted by voice to enter closed session at roughly 10:03 a.m.; the public session recessed, and no formal outcomes or votes from the closed session were announced on the record during the public meeting.
The closed-session notices cite Government Code section 54956.9(d)(1) for existing litigation and Government Code section 54956.8 for real property negotiations. Any actions, determinations, or disclosures resulting from the closed session will be disclosed consistent with applicable law when and if the council returns to open session and chooses to report out.
