Edison board hears wellness-focused strategic-plan update and public dashboard launch

Dr. Thomas Tuohy presented the strategic-plan update to the Edison Township Board of Education, emphasizing student and staff wellness as a top priority and previewing specific steps the district plans to take.
“Our primary responsibility as educators is to ensure that all of our kids and all of our staff, experience a physically and emotionally safe environment,” Tuohy told the board, outlining three priorities: safety, reducing stress and anxiety in the community, and improving recruitment and retention.
Tuohy highlighted a roughly 1-to-900 guidance-counselor-to-student ratio at the elementary level and proposed a new job designation — a student wellness system support coordinator — to carry caseloads and work directly on classroom-impacting issues. The presentation described use of contracted licensed clinical social workers, plans to embed mental-health interventions through the district’s multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and the development of a resource hub linking state, local and federal services.
Administrators also described telehealth initiatives aimed both at students and at giving staff seamless access to counseling and lower-level clinical care. Tuohy said the district is exploring provider agreements and noted reimbursement issues often affect provider willingness to participate; he called the district’s insurance structure an opportunity to develop local telehealth offerings.
Dr. O’Reilly, speaking for the administration, said the district has launched a live dashboard on the district website that will publicly track progress on each of the five strategic pillars and related milestones. He framed the dashboard as a transparency and accountability tool that shows which actions are in design, which are in architectural or planning phases, and which have been completed.
The presentation also referenced recent facilities work, including ribbon-cuttings at Woodrow Wilson and Edison Success Academy, and noted Edison Township passed the state CUSAC monitoring areas for fiscal accountability, personnel, facilities, curriculum and instruction while acknowledging there is room for improvement.
The administration said its next steps include public posting of the strategic-plan dashboard, continued review of staffing and development plans in 2025, and further work on telehealth and the wellness staffing model.
