Summary
The Jackson City Council on April 7 presented commendations to firefighters and central dispatchers who coordinated a January 2 house fire rescue that left the victim hospitalized and later released after two days in intensive care.
Mayor Scott Conger opened the council meeting by presenting commendations to members of the Jackson Fire Department, medics and central dispatch for their response to a Jan. 2 house fire on North Hayes Avenue that rescued a trapped resident.
The mayor recounted the response: dispatcher Caitlin Champion handled the initial call; firefighters including Justin Robertson and Kellen Knott forced entry and conducted an interior search; battalion chief Stanley Cole and Captains Campbell, Jackson and Bullman helped extract the victim; medics Jonathan Burke, Electra Bayer, Gabriel Bridal and Nicholas Wiggins transported the patient to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and then to Vanderbilt's ICU. Mayor Conger said the victim was released after two days and has since fully recovered.
"This incident represents the very best of our fire service," Conger said, praising "professionalism under pressure, decisive action, and an unrelenting commitment to saving lives." The council gave the responders a round of applause and presented written commendations.
No formal action or funding change accompanied the recognition; the presentation was ceremonial and meant to honor personnel and first-responders' coordination during the emergency.
