Staff ask commission to approve five-year Genetec support renewal after repairs raise fiscal-year costs

City staff told a staff agenda review on April 6 that they will seek City Commission approval to renew a five-year Genetec Advantage support contract through Miller Electric, citing ongoing repairs and the complexity of the city's security hardware and software.
Jim, a city staff member who briefed the group, said the Genetec Advantage maintenance and support coverage for the city's security system is due to expire May 1. He told the meeting that Miller Electric provided a quote of $71,442.04 for a five-year renewal and that the city has already charged $40,331.80 to Miller Electric this fiscal year for troubleshooting and repairs. "If we were to go forward with that, that would bring the total for their fiscal year to a $111,773 and change," Jim said.
The security upgrade project began in 2019 as a multi-phase effort to replace and upgrade access controls, secured doors, video surveillance, intercoms and other threat-management systems, according to Jim. The 2019 phase included new Genetec hardware and manufacturer-provided support; the subsequent maintenance contract was acquired through Johnson Controls and includes Genetec Advantage coverage.
Jim said the work requires specialized expertise and noted the city retains language in contracts to allow additional purchases for repairs and troubleshooting as needed. He also said the city settled outstanding issues with Johnson Controls last November but still has unfinished repairs the settlement is being applied to.
Staff indicated the Genetec renewal and the related fiscal authorization will appear on the consent agenda at the commission meeting April 7 for formal approval.
The staff review did not include a motion or vote; the item was described as a consent-agenda request and will be considered by the commission at its April 7 meeting.
