Redondo Beach board approves nearly $7 million in facilities contracts, roofing projects and vehicle purchases

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board on Feb. 25 approved a slate of facilities and procurement actions covering vehicles, retaining walls, roofing and a major adult‑school renovation.
Doctor Alpern (district staff) outlined the first item: authorization to purchase three vehicles from Honeywell Beach Ford not to exceed $190,000, with two eight‑passenger vans dedicated to Redondo Union High School uses. "Two of the vehicles I really want to point out are 8 passenger vans for Redondo Union High School," Alpern said when explaining the purchase and its intent to reduce bussing costs.
The board also awarded the Toledo Elementary retaining wall contract to MPI Contracting Services for $238,306 after the lowest bidder failed to meet licensing requirements. District staff said demolition will begin the week before spring break and construction the week after; the work is expected to take about three to four months.
On larger capital work, trustees approved a $3,934,000 bid award for the South Bay Adult School multipurpose renovation to SSMK Construction. Alpern said abatement work for that site will come to the board at the March 11 meeting and construction is targeted to begin April 1. Board discussion clarified that this project uses South Bay Adult School funds, not the general fund or bond funds.
The board also approved multiple summer roofing contracts across campuses. Examples discussed during the meeting included: Adams Middle School (~$933,525 to Best Contracting Services), Redondo Union High School (~$740,743 to Best Contracting Services), and Toledo Elementary (~$665,300 to Roof Construction). Several other schools received award notices (Jefferson, Lincoln, Alta Vista, Boerne, Paris) with individual bids and scopes varying by campus. Doctor Alpern noted the approvals at the meeting covered labor; roofing materials and related CMAS contracts will be presented at a subsequent meeting. Board members asked about inspection and oversight; district staff indicated Garland Roofing and the Garland Company coordinate inspections and materials oversight.
Funding for the roofing work was identified as Measure S; district staff said the bond issuance timing means they expect to have funds in the bank by May to reimburse projects once bonds are sold. Trustees discussed phasing to preserve campuses used for summer programs and noted contingency/change orders are permitted up to typical contract allowances.
All the item motions passed by voice vote. Board members asked staff to ensure clear schedules and communication for each campus and to monitor potential change orders and impacts on maintenance staffing.
The board also approved an agreement with author Jeff Selingo to provide two parent education workshops funded by LCAP; one session is scheduled for May 5 on college admissions.
