The Village of South Barrington Board of Trustees adopted an ordinance April 11 amending the village zoning code to allow drive-through facilities as a special use in Business and Manufacturing districts.
Trustee Joseph Abbate moved for adoption and Trustee Hina Patel seconded; the ordinance passed by roll call vote with six ayes and no nays. The change authorizes the Plan Commission and village staff to process special-use applications for businesses that propose drive-through components under the village’s zoning review procedures.
The board’s action follows Plan Commission review; trustees accepted the Plan Commission’s recommendation to update the zoning code language to treat drive-throughs as a special use rather than a by-right use. The ordinance does not itself approve any specific drive-through site or business; applicants will still need to submit detailed site plans and obtain any required special-use approvals and permits.
Trustees and staff did not debate specific commercial applicants during the meeting. The board also referred several related land-use items to the Plan Commission on April 11, including a variance request to consider a solar development on a decommissioned landfill at 541 East Mundhank Road and other zoning referrals for boat storage and a residential fence variance.
The ordinance took effect following adoption; the Plan Commission will handle subsequent permit review and site-specific approvals.
