Aerial footage shows a groundwater well facility under construction in California, where a presenter described the project as part of an aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) effort intended to store water for use during dry periods.
“Well, Aquifer Storage and Recovery essentially is a water management system,” the presenter said, adding that ASR lets cities “store water in the ground and recover that water at a later date when water supplies are constrained.” The narrator’s visuals showed blue pipes, a crane lowering equipment and workers operating heavy machinery at the site.
The presenter said the approach allows surface water and groundwater to be used side by side depending on year type and supply availability. He framed the work in the context of shifting weather patterns, saying, “California's climate is becoming increasingly volatile… we're seeing longer droughts… more intense storms, and the swings between dry years and wet years are much greater.”
On the project’s scale, the presenter said, “This year and into next year, we have 2 wells that are construction. We're currently standing at 1 of the sites of those wells,” and that the program anticipates adding two more wells in the area to expand capacity and the program footprint.
As an example of potential benefit, the presenter said, “15,000 acre feet, would be able to deliver water to about 30,000 single family homes, in a year,” noting that stored volumes at this scale can materially diversify local water supplies.
