Suffield schools report SAT results: growth in EBRW, board expresses concern about math

Of 143 eligible Grade 11 students, 136 took the Connecticut School Day SAT. District coaches reported growth among struggling EBRW readers and slight math improvements; board members pressed on comparability and math achievement gaps.
Assistant Superintendent Michelle Zawawi presented preliminary Grade 11 Connecticut School Day SAT results to the board on May 5, saying 136 of 143 eligible students participated.
Samantha Schrager, 6–12 ELA instructional coach, told the board there was “growth with struggling readers” in Evidence Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) scores after reviewing cohort comparisons between the PSAT and SAT. Domenico Casolari, 6–12 math instructional coach, reported “slight improvements” in math cohort scores and said the district’s introduction of an Algebra I Lab is intended to support incoming ninth-grade students who need additional math instruction.
Board members discussed the adaptive scoring method used in the digital SAT and asked about comparability between PSAT and SAT scores. Superintendent Matthew Dunbar and administration said results from the district reference group (DRG) will be provided when available for fall comparison. The Curriculum and Instruction Subcommittee noted the Algebra I Lab is planned with five sections and will be a recommended, pass/fail STEM elective that fulfills a credit requirement.
The administration said broader DRG comparisons and deeper disaggregation of results will be presented in future reports to inform instruction and supports.
