Absecon City Council approves $1.46 million bill list, hears safety advisory and road‑planning updates

The bill list passed on a roll-call vote with council members answering in the affirmative. The council also approved the regular meeting minutes for Dec. 19, 2024, and the reorganization minutes for Jan. 2, 2025; Councilwoman Evans and Councilman Sykes recorded abstentions specifically on the Dec. 19, 2024 minutes.
The measures were handled alongside routine procedural business. The clerk reported December receipts: the tax office took in $1,021,654.09, the construction office $5,836, the municipal court $8,285.56 and the clerk’s office $1,981.05.
Council members used the meeting to set committee schedules as they prepare for budget season. Councilman Sykes said his committee will meet Feb. 18 (third Tuesday at 7 p.m.). The finance committee will meet on the third Thursday of the month and is entering budget season, the council said. Councilman Light said his committee will meet on the third of next month at 5 p.m. and encouraged residents to email the council with concerns.
The engineering department reported that road‑program planning is ramping up for 2025 and that construction projects are in closeout until spring. "We'll be talking about projects as part of the budget," the engineering representative said.
Public safety items included a police‑department PSA urging residents to visibly display house numbers on mailboxes and houses so emergency responders can find addresses promptly. The police chief also warned of past accidents in New Jersey involving ice and debris coming off vehicles and obstructing drivers’ vision, urging motorists to exercise caution.
Mayor Marrone thanked city staff and outside partners for their work during a period of transition and praised new finance staff brought in from Galway Township. He quoted a family maxim: "Don't confuse activity with accomplishment," and recognized local resident Jim Logue on his 100th birthday.
After routine reports and a brief chance for public comment — during which no members of the public spoke — the council adjourned. Council committees will meet in February as noted; the council did not schedule votes on ordinances or budget adoption at this session.
