Beardstown council approves $10,000 for Abraham Lincoln statue, OKs street closure for church event

At its Sept. 3 meeting, the Beardstown City Council approved a $10,000 contribution to the Lincoln Courtroom & Museum Commission for an Abraham Lincoln statue (50% Tourism Fund, 50% General Fund) and authorized a temporary closure of Sixth Street for a St. Alexis Catholic Church event on Sept. 8, 2024.
Mayor Tim Harris called the Beardstown City Council to order at 6:38 p.m. on Sept. 3 at City Hall, where members approved a $10,000 contribution toward an Abraham Lincoln statue and granted a temporary street closure for a church event.
A motion by Alderperson Eric Harbin, seconded by Alderperson Shawn Taylor, approved the $10,000 contribution to the Lincoln Courtroom & Museum Commission for the Abraham Lincoln statue project. The council recorded five yeas (Alderpersons Lisa Buhlig, Mary Davis, Eric Harbin, Keith Schramm and Shawn Taylor), zero nays, one abstention (Ron Culves) and two absences (Chris Baer and Dawn Seward). The contribution will be paid 50% from the Tourism Fund and 50% from the General Fund.
Council members also approved a request from St. Alexis Catholic Church to close Sixth Street between Washington Street and Lafayette Street on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The motion was made by Alderperson Mary Davis and seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin and passed unanimously by voice vote.
Earlier in the meeting the council dispensed with reading and approved the minutes of the Aug. 20, 2024 meeting on a motion by Alderperson Eric Harbin, seconded by Alderperson Lisa Buhlig. The consent agenda was approved by omnibus roll-call motion by Alderperson Mary Davis, seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin.
Departmental reports were presented. The water superintendent reported 14,729,980 gallons pumped in August and 66,447,278 gallons for the May 1–April 30 reporting period. The police chief reported 711 calls answered in August (2,548 calls for the annual reporting period) and listed monthly tallies including arrests, traffic stops and accidents. The fire chief provided monthly and annual incident totals; code enforcement and zoning reports for August were noted as attached to the minutes.
Mayor Harris also announced that nomination petitions for mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and alderperson seats are available at City Hall. The filing period is Nov. 12–Nov. 18, 2024.
On a motion by Alderperson Mary Davis, seconded by Alderperson Eric Harbin, the council adjourned at 6:55 p.m.
