Council will rework fireworks-sale rules and ask attorney to prepare street-name ordinance

The council discussed revisiting an older fireworks ordinance that set hours for fireworks sales and other restrictions for pop-up vendors. The chair said the city could retrieve the old ordinance and modify it to set hours of operation, limit how long pop-up tents may be on site, and address safety concerns; if the changes are minimal the chair said the council might have a revised ordinance ready by June.

Councilmembers discussed typical approaches used by other communities, including limiting public discharge to certain days around July 4 and New Year's, and restricting how long temporary tent sales may remain on public property. "There's an outside chance that could happen," the chair said about a June timeline.

Separately, the chair said the county requires a local ordinance to approve a street-name change for the roadway associated with a True Value property and asked the city attorney to prepare language so the county can proceed. A councilmember also asked whether a street sign should be preordered and the council agreed to follow the city's standard blade lettering (6-inch currently, with a move toward 9-inch under new codes) when signs are ordered.

No vote was taken; the council directed staff to pull the old fireworks ordinance and asked the attorney to draft both the fireworks revisions and the street-name ordinance for council consideration.
