Student exchange visitors share experiences; board approves hosting two exchange students

The Henniker School District board heard from three visiting exchange students who described settling into classes and extracurricular life and approved hosting up to two exchange students for the coming year.

An administrator introduced the students from Germany, Norway and Australia and invited them to describe classroom differences and social life. A student who identified themself as coming from Germany said, “I only play volleyball in Germany, so I’ve been playing on the sports,” and described appreciating the opportunity to meet many different classmates. Another student from Australia said, “The teachers, they really get to know you,” and praised the friendliness of the school community.

Students noted contrasts in curriculum structure. One said that in Germany classes are largely fixed and students do not choose individual classes, while another described easier opportunities to change classes and meet more peers in the Henniker schedule. Board members thanked the students for participating and noted the value of cross-cultural exchange for the district’s small, less diverse community.

The board then moved to accept up to two exchange students (the same authorization given last year) and to authorize district staff to complete placement arrangements. Board members said applications were already in; the motion was approved by voice vote. The board noted staff would finalize logistics with host families and agencies.

The discussion was part of a broader meeting that also included budget, audit and policy items. The board’s action authorizes the district to proceed with placements for up to two exchange students and instructs staff to complete necessary agreements and paperwork.
