Falmouth schedules Oct. 26 fall town meeting; police-station funding to await May ballot
Summary
The Falmouth Finance Committee said fall town meeting will be Oct. 26 and that although a police-station funding article will be on the warrant, officials plan to wait until May (rather than November) to place the question on the state ballot to improve passage odds and to allow more time for tax-rate work.

The Falmouth Finance Committee confirmed April 6 that the fall town meeting will be held Oct. 26 and that the police-station funding article will appear on the warrant but officials plan not to put it on the November state ballot; instead they expect to wait until May.
The chair said the Oct. 26 date was chosen in part so the police-station article could be included on the warrant and so staff would have more time to set the tax rate. “The police building funding article will be there. However, they're not gonna put it on the state ballot, they're gonna wait till May for that,” the chair said, adding town officials thought the measure would be likelier to pass with higher turnout in May than in November.
Committee members also discussed moving the budget-calendar timeline earlier in the season to allow more meetings before tax bills are issued. The chair said the committee will begin budget work earlier (mid-July) while maintaining the required number of meetings, and that the select board will provide a draft capital budget once it is public.
Why it matters: Setting the town-meeting date and ballot timing affects the schedule for capital projects and the timing of public decision points for large expenditures such as a police facility. Delaying a bond or funding question until May can change voter turnout dynamics and the timing of tax-rate calculations.
Next steps: The police-station article will remain on the fall meeting warrant; town officials will not place it on the November ballot and expect to send it to the May ballot instead. The committee will begin budget reviews earlier in the summer.
