Merrimack High students win council OK for Watson Park adoption event

Seniors from Merrimack High School’s Peer Collaborative Leadership class presented a request on March 26 to hold a dog adoption and fund-raising event at Watson Park on May 3 (backup May 2), with the event window 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and the adoption portion from noon–2 p.m.
Sadie Cody, speaking for the students, said the event aims to support overflowing regional shelters, raise at least $1,000 in supplies or donations and facilitate local adoptions. The students estimated 50–100 attendees at peak times and described plans for a food truck (which would keep its sales revenue), lawn games provided by the school and leashed dogs from a partnering shelter.
Councilors asked about parking, cleanup and vendor arrangements; the students said they would patrol the park after the event and coordinate with the shelter to ensure animals are leashed and areas are kept clean. Paul (town staff) and other councilors offered publicity help through town channels and suggested nearby overflow parking if necessary.
Councilor Peter moved to allow the Merrimack High School peer collaborative leadership group to host the adoption and to authorize the town manager to sign any necessary paperwork; the motion passed unanimously, 7–0–0.
The students were asked to confirm final date, time and shelter partner with the town so the council and staff can publicize the event.
