Board committee endorses renaming Eastbank Head Start; administrators seek $1.2M supplemental for FY27

The Capital Improvements and subsequent personnel committees reviewed Head Start matters including a renaming recommendation for the Eastbank Head Start building and a supplemental FY27 funding request.
A renaming task force recommended the Eastbank Head Start be renamed the Bethune Early Learning Center to align with other district naming (Carver/Bethune consistency), assistant superintendent Miss Babin said. ‘‘We convened members of the community as well as school board members and site staff, and we’re proud to recommend the renaming,’’ she said.
Separately, Antoinette Nasser, Head Start administrator, presented a supplemental budget request for FY27. Nasser said Head Start’s federal award is approximately $2,094,555; the district supplemental request on page 2 of the packet totals about $1,205,597 to cover materials, staffing allocations across school sites and operational needs tied to the district’s pre-K expansion.
Nasser said the program typically exhausts its Head Start grant funds and then uses district supplements where needed; the supplemental request reflects the financial effect of distributing Head Start classrooms across multiple school locations. Board members asked for clarification of site-by-site openings, enrollment counts and sustainability; Nasser said she would provide additional detail for the board packet.
Next steps: the renaming recommendation and the FY27 supplemental budget request will be included on the board agenda for formal consideration Wednesday.
