Elkhart County EMA wins two small grants to buy weather radios for vulnerable residents

Courtney Matthews, deputy director of administration and support at Elkhart County Emergency Management Agency, asked commissioners to approve two grants to purchase weather radios for vulnerable residents. Matthews said the EMA annually distributes weather radios to elderly, low-income and potentially homebound residents so they can receive alerts during severe-weather events.
Commissioners approved a $2,500 Community Foundation grant and a $3,500 NIPSCO grant to support the purchase; both motions carried unanimously. Matthews said the combined grants will expand the program’s reach to residents who may not otherwise have ready access to timely weather warnings.
