Residents oppose temporary Huron Pointe Excavating yard; Planning Commission tables request

The Harrison Township Planning Commission on Jan. 16 opened a public hearing on a request from Huron Pointe Excavating LLC to establish a temporary storage yard at 32490 South River Road to support the South River Road bridge improvement project.
Adam Young, the township planner, said the company requested temporary use for up to three years or until the county completes the bridge work and proposed a new driveway to Jefferson Avenue, a fenced storage area with privacy screening, shoreline improvements and a commitment to restore the property at the end of the period. Krystal Rausch, representing the applicant, said the company “had already set things up at the proposed location, as they were forced out of their previous location by eminent domain laws.”
Several nearby residents spoke in opposition. Michael Holland said the operation “is a disruption to his home,” and Chris Dungan raised similar objections. Other speakers questioned what equipment would be stored, what security would be provided and what safeguards would prevent spills into adjacent waterbodies. Joshua Roberts asked about traffic impacts on Jefferson Avenue and spill-prevention measures; Susan Garrett sought basic information about the applicant.
After closing the public hearing and discussing the concerns and planner/engineer comments, the commission voted to table the application to gather additional information. The roll-call tally on the tabling motion was Ayes: Mike Viazanko, Larry Tomenello, Danielle Devlin; Nays: Tim Duncan, Carol Murray; Excused: Mark Bacha, Amanda Oparka. The motion set a latest return date of March 20 for supplemental information and revised plans.
The action is procedural: tabling leaves the temporary-use request unresolved and does not authorize on-site storage. The commission asked for more detail on site security, traffic impacts, spill-prevention and proof that alternative locations were not available or feasible.
