Board declines to approve coordinator job description pending fiscal details; agrees to eliminate three PKS paraeducator positions

On March 10 the Marysville Joint Unified board approved a resolution eliminating three categorically funded paraeducator (PKS) positions, primarily at Yuba Feather, and deferred action on a proposed coordinator of categorical programs because trustees said the agenda lacked dollar-value fiscal details.

Deputy Superintendent Gabe Simon explained the PKS reductions and said affected employees would be notified and offered open positions within the district; the board approved the elimination 7-0. The coordinator position (agenda item 19.2) was described as providing oversight for about $20 million in state and federal categorical programs and aligning those funds with the LCAP. Trustees repeatedly asked for the specific fiscal impact and whether the coordinator would be budget-neutral; administrators said funding would come from a mix of restricted and unrestricted sources but acknowledged the dollar amounts were omitted from the agenda and said they would return with detailed figures.

Angela Stegall, president of the Marysville Unified Teachers Association, criticized adding district-office positions while classroom staffing is being reduced and said the union had filed a demand to bargain on certain items. Trustees allowed the motion for the coordinator to die for lack of a second; members requested a follow-up report showing how much of the coordinator's cost would come from restricted grants versus the general fund.

The board took the PKS reduction and the coordinator discussion as separate actions: the PKS resolution carried and the coordinator job description will return to a future agenda with clearer fiscal detail.
