Board approves consent agenda including Chromebook influx and signals forthcoming replacement/fee policy
Summary
Trustees approved the consent agenda; item 5 (Chromebook replacements) was pulled for discussion, during which staff said a ~16,000-device purchase (~$6.5M) will refresh the fleet and the district is developing a fee-assessment system and updated guidance for device care by the 2026–27 school year.

The Elk Grove Unified School District board approved the consent agenda at its March 10 special meeting, including a separate approval of item 5 after a short discussion about Chromebook replacement and fee policy.
Trustee Yang moved to approve items 1–4 and 6–8; the motion was seconded by Trustee Vargas and carried on a voice vote. Trustee Ballerini pulled item 5 to ask about districtwide rules for lost or damaged Chromebooks and whether sites would begin assessing fees.
Technology staff (Mr. Barber) said the district is developing updated guidance on replacement expectations, a fee-assessment tool integrated with existing fee-collection software, and an elementary/secondary review of the 1:1 take‑home program for lower grade levels. Mr. Barber said the district is planning an "influx" purchase of roughly 16,000 Chromebooks — about $6.5 million — to refresh the fleet and support distribution plans for incoming cohorts (first, fifth and ninth grade distribution was described as an existing approach). Staff said some lower-grade teachers prefer devices remain in classrooms (cart-based use) and the district will evaluate whether to change those practices.
Trustees then moved and seconded approval of item 5 (motion by Miss Baldwin, second by Mister Yang); the board approved the item by voice vote. Mr. Barber said the district anticipates publishing device-care expectations and replacement guidance in time for the 2026–27 school year and will coordinate communications with fiscal services and school-site teams.
