Trustees at the Elk Grove Unified School District spent part of a March 10 special meeting in a facilitated workshop to reflect on and refine five district core values and to surface candidate success metrics for the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
Dr. Kristin Coats and facilitators reviewed the LCAP’s history and explained why strategic goals evolved into the district’s five core values, which now include fiscal stewardship and operational excellence alongside high-quality instruction, targeted supports, wellness, and family and community engagement.
Trustees worked in station rotations, writing three sticky notes per core value (what the value means, what success looks like, and which metrics should be tracked). The gallery-walk synthesis produced common themes: alignment around student-centered outcomes, requests for clearer definitions of "safety," and concerns that facility improvements sometimes resemble cosmetic fixes rather than investments that create pride in older schools.
Multiple trustees urged better, regionally scaled approaches to parent engagement to account for the district’s size (trustees noted the district covers roughly 320 square miles and 68 schools). Others pressed for explicit metrics tied to attendance, graduation and achievement gaps, and for clarity on what the district means by "safety."
Trustees said the workshop showed strong alignment in values but recognized differences in implementation priorities. Board members requested follow-up materials mapping core values to measurable indicators that staff can include in future LCAP proposals and presentations.
