Harrison Township authorizes purchase of replacement fire engine after Engine 2 struck in hit-and-run

Harrison Township’s Board of Trustees on Feb. 24 authorized purchase of a replacement fire engine after Engine 2 was damaged beyond use in a hit-and-run collision while responding to a call.
Fire Chief Dave Bostater reported that on Feb. 16 at approximately 3:00 a.m., Engine 2, a 2006 Pierce, was struck by a tractor-trailer while responding to an I-94 accident. No injuries were reported, but the apparatus was determined to be damaged beyond use and likely a total loss.
Chief Bostater identified a used 2014 Smeal engine priced at $300,000, with an additional estimated 10% (about $30,000) to perform minor work to put the vehicle into service. Clerk Adam Wit moved and Trustee Dean Olgiati seconded a motion to approve the purchase for $300,000 and to authorize up to an additional $30,000 for work to ready the engine; the motion carried.
The chief has been working with the township’s insurer (MMRMA) on the claim and conducted an assessment. The approval allows staff to proceed with acquiring the replacement vehicle and performing the necessary repairs and outfitting to return it to service.
