Garden Village Elementary students showcase 'Art in Action' program, trustees praise SEL and attendance gains

Garden Village Elementary students and staff presented highlights from their "Art in Action" curriculum at the Jefferson Elementary School District board meeting.
Noelle Sullivan Haley, principal at Garden Village Elementary, said Prop 28 funding helped the school hire certificated art teachers and that art instruction supports math and English-language-arts skills, increases student engagement and improves attendance. "Our Garden Village winter 2025 ADA was at 95.5%... Our chronic absenteeism decreased from 11.5 percent to 6.1," she told trustees, and she cited gains on the Panorama SEL survey in school safety, climate and sense of belonging.
Art teacher Miss Joy described how art lessons integrate with other subjects and support creativity, fine motor skills and social-emotional growth. Several students—Kaylee, Ryo and Caden among them—gave short show-and-tell remarks about their work and what they learned.
Trustees praised the presentation, the students'poise and the instructional integration, and presented certificates of appreciation to participating students. Board members used the presentation to underscore the role of arts instruction in student engagement and SEL.
