Board approves Carlsbad Village/Seaside Academy project, hires Lasardi for preconstruction

The Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees on Nov. 19 approved a project to return Carlsbad Village Academy and Carlsbad Seaside Academy from portable classrooms into a refreshed permanent campus and authorized a preconstruction services agreement with Lasardi Construction.

Staff said the leased permanent campus previously designed for CBA is currently occupied by the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education (NCSI); the district notified NCSI that the lease will end this year so the sites can be returned to CVA and CSA. The recommended scope includes classroom and administrative refreshes, accessibility upgrades, site work and campus‑wide safety improvements.

"The proposed scope of work for that campus, including classroom refresher, administrative space improvements, site work, and campus‑wide safety upgrades, staff respectfully recommends passage of agenda item 10.2," project staff said in the presentation. Trustees asked clarifying questions about potential residual NCSI uses and the status of portables; staff replied they will return any significant lease decisions to the board.

Separately, trustees approved a preconstruction services agreement with Lasardi Construction to perform site evaluations, design assistance and coordination with the architect so final construction documents can be developed; that item also passed unanimously.

Both motions passed 5–0. Staff said construction and demolition sequencing is still being developed and will be brought back to trustees for future approvals before any construction contract is awarded.
