Harrison Township trustees approve $969,241.81 in bills, adopt 2026 court budget and hire probationary firefighter

The board approved the Consent Agenda, which included the bills, after Trustee Brian Batkins moved and Trustee Liza Brown seconded the motion; the motion carried. Clerk Adam Wit later moved and Trustee David Bratto seconded adoption of the 2026 41B District Court budget following a recommendation from the 41B Court Management Council; Chief Judge Sebastian Lucido and Judge Jacob Femminineo were present for the budget discussion.
Supervisor Kenneth Verkest told the board that the Harrison Township Fire Department’s first firefighter internship candidate, Nathaniel Lewsick, completed Macomb County Community College Fire Academy #86. Verkest said the township received a Department of Education Career Pathways in Healthcare – Apprenticeship Model Grant that covered the $3,500 academy fee and provided an additional $2,000 for training expenses. The board approved hiring Lewsick as a Probationary Firefighter and to start him at the Step 2 (after 12 months) wage rate, with the understanding he remains subject to a 12-month probationary period.
The board also approved operational items presented on the agenda: receiving and filing the third-quarter 2025 Treasurer’s Report on investment activity, purchasing discounted HCMA 2026 annual park stickers for resale to Harrison Township residents, and hiring a part-time shuttle bus driver for the Senior Center at the non-CDL rate. The board approved hiring Kurt Klingbail as a shuttle bus driver.
On department health expenses, Clerk Adam Wit moved and Trustee Liza Brown seconded approval of payment to NDS Wellness of $25,582.00 for 2025 firefighter physicals; the motion carried. The Supervisor noted that the firefighter physicals are conducted through NDS Wellness.
