Planning commission forwards zoning ordinance and map amendments to Township Board; short-term rentals removed from package

On Jan. 15 the Harrison Township Planning Commission voted to recommend that the Township Board approve proposed zoning ordinance and zoning map amendments dated Jan. 7, 2026, which include text and map changes with emphasis on housing-related provisions. The commission reiterated that references to short-term rental regulations were removed from the amendment package following prior discussion.
Township Planner Adam Young said the commission had postponed action at a previous meeting to make adjustments to several items, including removing short-term rental language. The package also identified four properties for a second review: two off South River Road, one near Jefferson/Metro Parkway by Lake St. Clair Metropark, and the Casa Grande Apartments.
Motion by Amanda Oparka, supported by Larry Tomenello, to recommend approval of the amendments to the Township Board carried on roll call with Danielle Devlin recording the sole dissent.
The commission also set a work session for Feb. 5, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. specifically to discuss short-term rentals; Planner Young said postcards submitted by residents on the topic will be shared at that session. The recommendation now moves to the Township Board for its consideration.
