The Harrison Township Planning Commission discussed proposed clarifications to Section 5.02 of the zoning ordinance governing detached accessory buildings and how covered boat wells are counted.
Township Planner Adam Young reminded the commission that the current ordinance limits the number and combined size of detached accessory buildings and treats covered boat wells differently depending on whether they are on the water and whether they are enclosed. Commissioners tentatively agreed that open-air or unenclosed boat wells should not count toward the total number or combined size of accessory buildings, while enclosed boat houses should count.
Commissioner Larry Tomenello suggested adding more detail to the definition of a covered boat well, specifically clarifying how the sides are treated for counting purposes. Nick McCready, the ZBA applicant whose case prompted the discussion, spoke to the commission about his situation, and C. William Bardill asked for clarification on the issue.
Staff indicated further drafting and clarification will be needed before any ordinance amendment is prepared for formal action.
