The Village of Maywood Board of Trustees on Monday directed staff to prepare an application for Category I (short-term, summer employment) funding from the Division of Family and Community Services, Bureau of Positive Youth Development’s Illinois Youth Investment Program and approved providing letters of support to outside agencies seeking related funding.
Trustee N. Booker moved to “direct staff to work with the Village Grant Writer to write a grant not to exceed $100,000 for the Summer Work Project for our youth,” and Trustee K. Wellington seconded. Trustee M. Jones sought clarification about the proposal; Booker responded. The motion passed with four ayes — Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Trustees M. Jones, K. Wellington and N. Booker — and three absences noted for that vote. The board’s action authorizes staff to prepare the state grant application and pursue the award if successful.
In a separate item, Trustee N. Booker moved and Trustee M. Jones seconded a motion that the village provide letters of support to any qualifying outside entities applying to the Illinois Youth Investment Program’s non-targeted categories in three specified areas intended to benefit Maywood residents ages 16–24. That motion carried with ayes from Mayor Perkins and Trustees I. Brandon, M. Jones, K. Wellington and N. Booker; Trustees A. Sanchez and M. Lightford were absent.
Manager Willie Norfleet Jr. and Human Resources Coordinator LaSondra Banks were listed as staff in attendance; the board recorded no public comments. The meeting was called to order at 6:31 p.m. and adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
Next steps: staff were directed to work with the Village Grant Writer to draft the application and pursue the Illinois Youth Investment Program award; no additional details about timelines, application deadlines, or matching funds were specified in the meeting record.
