Maywood board appoints commissioners, backs MyCivic app review and considers Juneteenth observance

At the July 14 meeting the Maywood Board of Trustees approved two appointments and several community-oriented administrative items.
Trustees voted to appoint Gene Washington to the Board of Fire and Police Commissions and Ronald Rivers to the Energy and Environmental Commission. Trustee N. Booker introduced MyCivic, a mobile civic-engagement and 311 reporting platform, and the board directed staff to investigate the tool and return with recommendations at the next meeting.
Trustees Miguel Jones and I. Brandon moved to investigate adding Juneteenth as an official village holiday; Attorney Jurusik noted potential bargaining-agreement and cost implications and suggested issuing a proclamation as an interim step. Trustees directed staff to investigate the fiscal and contractual implications.
The board also approved expanding an Honorary Street Designation program and discussed swapping Columbus Day for Juneteenth if contract language allows. Trustee M. Jones proposed vetting acquisition of select property on the 800 block of 5th Avenue for parking or administrative relocation; that motion was sent to staff for vetting and failed on recorded vote. The board discussed the Summer Youth Work Program and supervision levels; a motion to proceed as proposed failed.
Next steps: staff will investigate MyCivic and report back, provide cost and contract guidance on adding Juneteenth as a holiday, and pursue the Honorary Street initiative as directed by trustees.
