Scotland Public Library board appoints Amy Russell and hears updates on grants, projects and staffing

The Scotland Public Library Board voted Nov. 12 to add Amy Russell to the board and received updates on recent projects and staffing.
Chairperson Joanne Todd called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the board approved the minutes of the October meeting and the October financial report. Treasurer Angela Maschka reported the trust account was down slightly but described the library’s overall finances as "doing fine." The board accepted the treasurer’s report by motion.
Library Director Mary Geragotelis reported that the Novus project is complete and that the final payment from the Fiber-to-Libraries grant has been made. Geragotelis also presented October attendance and circulation statistics to the board.
Under unfinished business, board members considered several ongoing community projects. Linda Segar will contact a local artist to request a sample for a children’s mural by the end of the year. An Eagle Scout-led trail and bridge maintenance and repair project has begun at the library grounds; the town maintenance worker has met with the scout and a caution tape is across the entrance while work continues. The board also noted that the library raised $477 at the recent Highland Festival.
Poet Laureate Susan Powers briefed the board on her programming at the library, including workshops for children, youth and adults, readings at area libraries, and attendance at a poetry seminar. Powers said she had been awarded a two-week writers residency fellowship in Arkansas next year and read one of her poems to those present at the meeting.
The board approved a motion to nominate Amy Russell as a new board member. Beth Delaney moved to nominate Russell; Leahbeth Scandura seconded and all voted in favor. Brenda Gagnon will submit Russell’s name for formal nomination at the next Board of Selectmen meeting.
The board announced a used book and bake sale set for Nov. 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Baystate Books will collect unsold books on Nov. 29. In new business, Geragotelis notified the board that the library assistant has resigned and that she is accepting applications to fill the position. Chairperson Joanne Todd adjourned the meeting at 7:55 p.m.
The board’s next procedural step is for Brenda Gagnon to present the nomination of Amy Russell to the Board of Selectmen; no further votes on library policy or budgets were recorded at this meeting.
