Apple Valley Unified trustees elect new president and clerk, approve meeting calendar and routine items

The Apple Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees selected a new leadership team and approved routine administrative items at its December meeting. Trustee Rick Raleigh was elected board president and Trustee Amanda Buchanan was chosen as clerk; both nominations were moved, seconded and approved by the trustees present.
The outgoing board president delivered a farewell speech noting her decision to step down from the presidency and thanking staff, teachers and families for their support. "As I step down from my role as president of this board, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported and worked alongside me this past year," the president said.
The trustees also approved the district's 2025–26 meeting calendar under the flexibility provided by AB 486 and confirmed a recommended administrative‑hearing chairperson. Consent items 1–4, described by the board as routine, were approved together in a single motion to conserve meeting time. All motions noted at the meeting were approved unanimously by the trustees present.
Board President (outgoing) and Superintendent Trinidad Nelson both commended student presenters from Rancho Verde and Sandia Academy before the business portion of the meeting. The board set its next regular meeting for Jan. 23, 2025, at 5 p.m. in the Educational Support Center conference room.
The board did not report any recordable action from the closed session held earlier in the meeting.
