San Mateo County supervisors on March 24 approved the confirmation of Tory Newman as director of Public Works and adopted a modified resolution that deleted an erroneous reference to the county surveyor.
County Executive Mike Caligi recommended Newman after a nationwide search, praising his hands‑on approach and management of capital projects. The board amended the resolution to remove references to county surveyor responsibilities (staff said the county surveyor position is already filled) and then approved the appointment on roll call.
The vote came with two supervisors absent from the recorded roll call; staff noted the road‑commissioner designation remained in effect. The board said they will follow regular onboarding procedures and update organizational records to reflect the director appointment and the corrected resolution text.
