Judge Ronnie Cochran read the proclamation and said the CWPP is intended to identify and prioritize hazardous-fuel reduction, structural hardening and collaborative mitigation measures to reduce wildfire risk where development meets vegetation. The proclamation frames the priority as protecting homes, infrastructure and natural resources in wildland-urban interface areas.
A commissioner noted that while the proclamation language discusses protecting forests, the practical emphasis is on protecting residents and infrastructure where people live among plantation pine and other vegetation. The court approved the proclamation by voice vote.
The proclamation directs county officials and community stakeholders to participate in the CWPP process; staff and program partners are expected to engage in planning and outreach to produce a written, mutually agreed document for Newton County.
