Covington Board names Courtney Flukas as next superintendent

The Covington Board of Education voted to appoint Courtney Flukas as the district's next superintendent following a brief executive session on April 9. The board approved a resolution and contract to make Flukas the next superintendent, and the roll call recorded unanimous support.

The board chair introduced Flukas as the candidate who "best matched" the district's search profile, saying the board sought a leader who "puts students first, listens before leading, builds trust through transparency and follow through, and has the courage to lead meaningful change." The chair also said Flukas "brings nearly 2 decades of educational leadership experience" and most recently served as unified student supports officer for Indianapolis Public Schools.

Courtney Flukas, introduced by the chair as the incoming superintendent, thanked the board and community and delivered prepared remarks about listening, partnership and shared responsibility. "I will lead with integrity, with openness, and with an unwavering commitment to children," she said, emphasizing community engagement, staff collaboration and a focus on student supports, special education, mental health and school culture.

A board member moved to approve the resolution and contract; the motion was seconded and the board then voted in favor during a roll call called by the clerk. The board chair thanked community members, staff and advisory participants "including Sylvia and Najah from the Alma advisory group" for their roles in the search process.

Next steps discussed on the meeting record were limited to formalizing the contract and completing transition tasks; no additional policy actions were recorded at the meeting. The board adjourned at the conclusion of the appointment vote.
