Community urges repairs to Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center; residents debate district practices on student identity

Peter Manzi, introduced himself as a Carlsbad Unified employee and the district’s teacher of the year, urged trustees to inspect and preserve the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center (CAC). “When you walk in that room, we have amazing teachers, directors who make magic on that stage, but it’s behind the curtain that we don't see,” Manzi said, describing broken stairs, intermittent power issues, and a lack of district access to building controls. He asked trustees to tour the facility before final decisions are made about renovations or reallocations of funds.
Monica Hall and other speakers echoed the call to keep promises to the community to repair and maintain the CAC so students have equitable facilities for performances and instruction.
At the same time, Katrina Weidlick (GSA adviser) thanked the board and the superintendent for celebrating students during the city's pride proclamation and invited trustees to attend GSA events. “Seeing the smiles of students and their families is so rewarding,” she said.
The public comment period also included a contentious statement from Catherine Clancy, who argued against district practices of social affirmation for minors and described medical claims she said followed affirmation. No district staff provided a rebuttal during her three-minute comment; the claims were not substantiated in the meeting record.
The board did not take immediate policy action on any of these public comments but took the CAC concerns into account when discussing later agenda items and asked staff to provide follow-up information where appropriate.
