Stallworth Charter leaders and families urge board to renew five‑year charter term

Representatives of Doctor Lewis Stallworth Senior Charter School presented to the Stockton Unified board in support of renewing their charter for a five‑year term starting July 1, 2026.
"Our school began with a unanimous vote by Stockton Unified in 2008," said Gail Stallworth, executive director, describing Stallworth's emphasis on arts, after‑school programming and community engagement. Stallworth leaders highlighted steady academic progress and cited reclassification and growth among English learners.
School staff outlined supports for English learners and special education. "For the last five years, the school has been reclassifying about 10% of students from the program each year," said Claudia Espinosa, the school's ELD coordinator, and noted that, of 256 students, 160 are classified as English learners.
Parents and alumni spoke in favor of renewal, describing Stallworth as "a family" and praising small class sizes and targeted supports. Several parents said their children have shown measurable academic and social growth at Stallworth and asked trustees to support renewal.
Board members asked the Stallworth team about IEP counts and turnover. School representatives said they currently have about 20 students with IEPs and a turnover rate near 2–3 percent, and described close coordination with El Dorado SELPA for compliance and supports.
No final action on the renewal was taken at the hearing; the district will publish a staff report and bring the matter back for board action at a future meeting.
