At second reading the board approved two administrative regulation updates clarifying how summer and out-of-district coursework feeds into placement and graduation plans.
AR 6146.11 (alternative credits toward graduation): Staff replaced some language to emphasize that proof of completion for coursework completed over the summer must be submitted prior to the first day of the PVPUSD school year and that an unofficial proof (for example an online confirmation or instructor screenshot) may be accepted initially. An unofficial transcript or proof of completion must be received within two weeks after school starts so counselors can finalize placement; the board amended timing language to align with local add/drop practices and counselor workflows. Doctor Wildey said counselors retain discretion to verify completion and to work with families when institutions delay transcript delivery.
AR 6141.5 (advanced placement and placement requests): The board adopted language requiring that students seeking placement into AP/honors/accelerated courses use the district's request-for-placement process and must have earned a grade of C or higher in the listed prerequisite course as defined in the district course handbook. The regulation clarifies that remediation does not substitute for the prerequisite grade. Counselors and student board members discussed edge cases and the role of counseling teams in reviewing extenuating circumstances; counseling staff said they handle exceptions through existing SST and support processes.
Board action: After clarifying amendments to timing and wording, the board approved the policies by unanimous vote at second reading.
What happens next: Staff will finalize policy text and present clean copies at the next formal packet; counseling staff will continue to operationalize add/drop timelines and guidance for students and families about required documentation.
