VCUSD says it has boosted digital accessibility ahead of April 2026 ADA changes

Vallejo City Unified School District communications staff told the governing board they have substantially upgraded the district’s digital accessibility and are preparing for a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ruling expected to take effect in April 2026.
Director of Communications Selena Bagio introduced the item and described the work as foundational to equity and the district’s strategic plan. Webmaster supervisor Victorio Suarez told the board the district’s overall accessibility score rose from about 78% in 2022 to 97% and that upcoming changes will improve navigation, consistent colors and templates, captions for videos, and screen‑reader compatibility.
Suarez said the ruling expands ADA principles into the digital environment and will require public institutions to ensure content is accessible for people who use assistive technologies. To meet that standard, staff have standardized core platforms (ParentSquare for direct messaging, Smore/ParentSquare for newsletters and Google calendars for school calendars), produced templates and a content library, provided monthly staff trainings, and integrated AI tools to check clarity and structure.
Board members asked questions; staff emphasized this is both a compliance and equity effort and that the district will publish significant site updates in the coming days. No vote was required; the presentation was received as an information item.
