Hacienda La Puente Unified outlines "New Pedagogies for Deep Learning" as district instructional framework

Hacienda La Puente Unified School District officials used a virtual town hall to explain the district's adoption of New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, saying the framework is the foundation for instruction across elementary, secondary and adult education.
Dr. Helene Cunningham, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, told parents and staff that "NPDL is our innovative district wide instructional framework" and described it as an eight-year initiative that connects HLPUSD to a global network of schools. She said the framework centers on four elements'pedagogical practices, learning partnerships, learning environments and leveraging digital'and six competencies including citizenship, character, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.
Why it matters: District leaders said NPDL is not a separate paid program but an instructional approach intended to increase student engagement, voice and real-world learning. Cunningham listed practices such as project-based and inquiry learning, flexible grouping and use of technology for formative assessment. She also highlighted cross-school and international partnerships and said students have presented at global deep learning labs.
Cunningham and Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jimenez emphasized family engagement: Cunningham invited the public to an MPDL showcase on May 1 from 4'6 p.m. at the Willow Conference Center, where schools will display student work. Jimenez reinforced that NPDL "supports our core content areas" and that aspects of the framework align with California's standards.
The presentation included examples of classroom practice (student-led inquiry and collaborative problem solving) and district efforts to train teachers, classified staff and parents. Officials said NPDL aims to prepare students for future jobs by strengthening agency, communication and decision-making skills.
The town hall moved next to communications and Q&A; the district said it will post the full presentation and a recording for review.
