Local students tell board Capital Convoy trip boosted civic learning and ebike safety advocacy

Students who participated in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Council of PTAs’ Capital Convoy described how meetings with legislators and staff influenced their view of policymaking and motivated them to keep advocating on public-safety topics such as ebike rules for youth.
Asher Friedman, a junior at Palos Verdes High School, said the trip "was one of the most impactful experiences I've done" and that meeting legislative staff and touring the Capitol inspired his career thinking. Other students said they met Assembly staff and, in at least one case, a legislator who pledged to support bills the students discussed.
The students emphasized ebike safety as a priority: they asked for a consistent statewide framework and education for riders under 18, including safety coursework. "We advocated for consistent statewide ebike regulations requiring ebike riders under 18 years old to complete a safety course," one student said. Board members and staff thanked the students and the PTA for organizing the trip and encouraged continued civic engagement.
Next steps: the board recognized the delegation, invited students and staff to take a group photo, and staff will post a summary of the student presentation to the district website.
