Committee reviews Waldo Middle overload pay and proposes substitute pools for custodial and office staff

Dave, a district staff member, presented personnel items to the Finance & Personnel Committee, beginning with a recommendation to approve overload pay for five staff members at Waldo Middle School after a math teacher’s absence led to difficulties in securing a substitute. He said the overload covered work from Dec. 1, 2025 through Jan. 16, 2026 and allowed students to continue instruction by a qualified educator.

"There is a recommendation to approve an overload for 5 staff members who performed overload work from 12/01/2025 through 01/16/2026," Dave said. Committee members raised no questions on the matter; Dave noted the item would be dropping for action this evening (to the board).

Dave also requested permission to post vacancies to create substitute pools for custodians and office staff to ensure uninterrupted operations and to build a pool of candidates for future permanent openings. He proposed initial pay rates of $17.00 per hour for custodians and $16.83 per hour for office staff. Dave said creating the substitute pools had been requested in part by the union and that the district’s contracts allow forming such pools.

Committee members asked whether substitute pools previously existed and whether the union contract allowed the proposed postings; Dave replied the district had had substitute pools in 2020 for some roles but the office-staff pool did not exist currently and that forming substitute pools is permitted. Dave said the vacancy postings and the substitute-pool proposal will go to the board for formal action at the next meeting.
