Granite City CUSD 9 board authorizes $1.23 million Chromebook purchase, approves bus and student-pay changes

The Granite City CUSD 9 Board of Education on Wednesday authorized the purchase of 3,200 Chromebooks for the 2026–27 school year, approved a 14-passenger activity bus purchase and passed several routine personnel and tax-appeal resolutions.
Administrators requested authorization to buy 3,200 Chromebooks from vendor Travera for $1,229,100 to continue the district's 1-to-1 device program. The proposal allocates funding for 1,700 devices from Title I and plans to lease 1,500 devices using district funds over four years. The board voted to approve the purchase.
The board also approved the purchase of a 2026 Chevrolet TranTech 14-passenger multifunction activity bus for $95,434 from Southern Bus and Mobility, which holds a state contract for the vehicle. Administrators said delivery is expected in roughly four months and the district will pay after July 1, 2026.
Among other items, the board approved employment and retirement recommendations, renewed Illinois High School Association membership for 2026–27 (administrators noted IHSA is not charging membership dues or state-series entry fees this year), and adopted multiple property-tax-appeal resolutions, each presented by district administrators with docket numbers recorded in the motion.
On compensation, the board approved a student-worker pay-rate correction so wages earned in calendar year 2024 will be updated to $14 an hour and wages in calendar year 2025 to $15 an hour to align with Illinois minimum-wage increases.
The meeting included several recognitions: Granite City High School wrestlers and the girls wrestling qualifiers were honored, speech-team students who advanced to IHSA state competition were recognized, and lead custodian Tanya Pulley was commended after administrators said she performed the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student. A district staff member described Pulley's action as "a heroic feat."
All formal motions recorded on the agenda were approved by roll call, with occasional abstentions noted in minutes approvals and executive-session minutes votes. The board adjourned after completing the published agenda.
