District 39 reports 497 students with IEPs; 18 families pursue single-subject acceleration

District officials told the Wilmette School District 39 board that the Illinois State Board of Education's annual special-education child count showed District 39 was serving 497 students with individualized education programs on Dec. 1.
"This year, District 39 was serving 497 students with IEPs on December 1," Dr. Swanson said, noting the figure includes 16 students enrolled in private and parochial schools who receive some services from the district. The district's current percentage of students with IEPs is 14.9 percent, Dr. Swanson said, which he described as consistent with the district's historical trends and the state average.
Separately, district administration provided an update on the single-subject acceleration process. Administration said families may submit applications through the end of the week and that, "Thus far, 18 families have indicated interest in having their child participate in the additional assessment procedures." The administration said the revised process and criteria have been reviewed by the board's attorney, the North Cook Intermediate Service Center and the Illinois State Board of Education and that the district will update website infographics to clarify procedures.
The board received written communications related to a request to prohibit gasoline-powered leaf blowers during instruction hours and a message about the acceleration placement policy; the district also reported several Freedom of Information Act requests seeking contracts, vendor records, staff contact information and purchasing records.
What happens next
The district will continue to accept applications for single-subject acceleration through the stated deadline, review submitted materials and provide updated informational materials online to address community feedback.
