Palmdale students recognized for pursuing biliteracy at board meeting

At a school board meeting, Palmdale School District students were honored for pursuing biliteracy, district staff said.
Sonia Salcedo, introduced by a board member as the director of access and equity for multilingual programs, told the board that fifth- and eighth-grade students had built portfolios that included research, volunteer hours and speeches before a review panel. "We really want to encourage them to continue to add a third language if possible in the future," Salcedo said.
The recognition highlighted students who completed extensive out-of-class work as part of a pathway to biliteracy. Salcedo said many of the students who received seals at a recent Pete Knight senior awards event were former dual‑immersion students in the Palmdale School District, and she urged continued backing of the district's dual-immersion offerings.
Assistant principal Dionne Pomaru and other staff read names of fifth- and eighth-grade students being honored and thanked parents and board members for attending. Speakers repeatedly framed the recognition as evidence that the district's multilingual and dual-immersion programs are producing multilingual graduates.
The board meeting continued after the recognitions with other agenda items and awards.
