Summary
At its recent meeting the Harbor Advisory Committee discussed reviving the Thunder Bay Maritime Festival in August with a nighttime Venetian boat parade, educational programming led by Inland Seas Education and visits from two tall ships; staff said a packet for American Cruise Lines will go to city council for an April 6 meeting.
The Harbor Advisory Committee discussed plans to revive the Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, including a proposed evening Venetian boat parade, during its meeting.
The Chair said the festival is planned for a Friday–Sunday in August and that "Inland Seas" will run day sails and educational activities, while the Chamber of Commerce is expected to handle parade registration. "We're kinda modeling off of what Charlevoix does," the Chair said, describing the Venetian night as a lights parade with boats processing down the river and returning to the marina.
Why it matters: committee members said the festival could draw visitors and support other waterfront events already planned for the season. Staff emphasized early promotion this year compared with last year to build attendance.
Staff reported that two vessels that visited last year are returning and that the committee has been in contact with multiple Great Lakes marinas about cruise activity. "I think what the city is proposing is more than fair for current rates," a staff member said, describing rates for vessels visiting Alpena as slightly below the general cruise-ship averages because the riverfront offerings are still being improved. Staff said American Cruise Lines will be discussed by the city council at its April 6 meeting and that the company’s first planned visits would likely be in early June.
Committee members discussed logistics for a nighttime parade, including a marshalled lead boat, how to handle bridge openings during the procession and registration requirements. The Chair said the Chamber (Paige) is motivated to lead registration and coordination, and asked committee members to share contacts who remember how past events were run.
No formal vote or council decision was recorded at the meeting; staff said the next step is to finalize event logistics with the Chamber and bring any necessary materials to city council as required.
The committee scheduled its next meeting for May 7.
